Kelleher Construction Company, Inc. is pleased to announce the completion of the new Concrete Batching Plant in Waltham, MA for Aggregate Industries. 

This 3,600 sf, 60 ft high pre-engineered steel building, constructed into a 36 ft slope on a five-acre site will be home to Aggregate Industries’ new concrete plant.  The 36 ft grade differential, accomplished by massive retaining wall construction, will allow trucks to deposit sand and stone directly into bins at the upper level, thus eliminating the overhead conveying systems usually required at most concrete batching plants.  This design will prove to both increase productivity and minimize space.

Construction of the concrete batching plant began in February 2004.  Unique to this project are the required reinforced concrete retaining walls, in some areas 36ft high and 4ft thick, as well as the load bearing floor slabs, up to 4 ft thick, reinforced by a double mat of #11 rebar throughout.  In addition, Kelleher faced some interesting challenges when it came to flashing, for they needed to accommodate for the cement silos which project directly through the plant roof.  Erection of the pre-engineered structure followed the installation of the batching equipment for the plant.

Subcontractors on this project are Anchor Excavating Corporation (earthwork), Davidson Concrete Construction Corporation (foundations), Collins Overhead Door, Inc., Star Building Systems (pre-engineered building supplier), Industrial Transfer and Storage (batch plant rigging), Francesco Demolition (demolition and asbestos abatement at existing plant), Derry Concrete (concrete flatwork).  The architect for this project is GSD Associates, AIA of North Andover.  Engineers from Ray Fitzmaurice Associates (structural) and Norwood Engineering (civil), in conjunction with Aggregate Industries’ in-house engineers were also contracted for this project.
